“Nation’s Sweetheart” Ryoko Hirosue Halts Career Amid Assault & Health Crisis

Japanese actress Ryoko Hirosue, once celebrated as the “Nation’s Little Sister” in Japan, has officially suspended all entertainment activities following a series of scandals and a medical diagnosis.
Assault Allegation and Public Backlash
Ryoko Hirosue recently came under heavy public criticism after being accused of assaulting a nurse. According to reports, the incident occurred at a hospital in Shizuoka Prefecture, where Ryoko Hirosue was receiving treatment following a traffic accident in April. While waiting for care, she allegedly kicked and scratched a nurse, leading to her arrest on charges of bodily harm. Though later released, she is currently under investigation while not in custody, following a developing settlement with the victim.

Controversy grew after Ryoko Hirosue was seen smiling broadly immediately after her release, sparking public backlash over perceived insensitivity.
Health Diagnosis and Hiatus from the Spotlight
In response, her agency released a statement confirming that Ryoko Hirosue has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and hyperthyroidism, and is now receiving outpatient care.
“She will be stepping back from all professional engagements to focus on her physical and mental recovery,” the agency said.

The scandal follows a high-profile affair revealed in 2023, in which Ryoko Hirosue publicly apologized for her relationship with a celebrity chef nine years her junior. The affair led to her divorce from her husband and significantly damaged her public image.
Ryoko Hirosue began her career as an idol actress in the 1990s, quickly becoming a household name across Japan and internationally. Known for her roles in acclaimed films like Poppoya and Himitsu, she enjoyed widespread fame and affection from fans in Korea and beyond.

Now, at the center of both legal and medical crises, her fall from grace is making headlines across Asia.
